SOUTH-CENTRAL : Garvey School to Add 3 Campuses
The Marcus Garvey School, one of South-Central’s largest and oldest black-owned private schools, has announced plans to open three new campuses in South-Central over the next two years.
With fund-raising revenue and donations from celebrities such as Charles S. Dutton, Dionne Warwick and Ice T, school officials said the first of the new campuses will open in January at 6th and Slauson avenues. The new campus will enroll 208 students.
Founded in 1975 to provide an Afrocentric education for youths, the West Slauson Avenue campus currently enrolls 400 students in kindergarten through ninth grade, with more than 200 students on a waiting list, Palmer said.
The school’s curriculum of disciplines such as history, art and math and literature highlight African and African-American contributions.
Palmer said the expansion will give more area children access to the Garvey School’s curriculum.
“More of our youth who have been victimized by a system of miseducation will be able to take advantage of our programs,” Palmer said.
The school, which has an annual tuition of about $3,500, has another fund-raiser planned for June 17, officials said.
