The Texas Rangers say Jose Canseco hurt his arm when he made a one-inning relief appearance at Boston on May 29. He worked the eighth inning of the Rangers’ 15-1 loss and has started only one time in the next six games. He has been hitless in five at-bats without hitting the ball out of the infield since his pitching appearance.

Canseco underwent a magnetic resonance imaging test Friday to determine the cause of pain in his right forearm that arose after he threw 33 pitches against the Red Sox.

Kevin Kennedy, the Rangers’ rookie manager, said he regrets having used Canseco as a pitcher.

“I don’t feel good about it,” Kennedy told The Dallas Morning News. “I’ll take any heat you want to throw my way. I truly felt at the time that we were doing the right thing. I did it for a reason. I did it to save the bullpen.”
