Gergen to Be Accepted in All-Male Club

WASHINGTON — It was a popular membership in the years that Republicans held the White House. And David Gergen, new counselor to President Clinton, said Monday that working for a Democratic Administration will not alter his membership in the all-male, super-secret, super-exclusive Bohemian Club.
The club brings together--in Bohemian Grove outside San Francisco--leaders of government, industry and the media for an encampment each summer. The highlight is said to be a weekend in tents where some 2,000 men in various stages of undress mix partying and power networking. This year’s festivities are scheduled for the weekend of July 23-25.
Gergen, asked about his membership, said he believed he would become a member this year after a lengthy nomination process. He would not say when he was nominated for club membership.
Every Republican President since Calvin Coolidge has been a member of the club, which has a clubhouse in San Francisco.
Women’s groups roundly criticized the all-male group during the GOP years, and its encampment is routinely picketed from afar.
