The city of Simi Valley will offer a free workshop Saturday on back-yard composting to reduce the amount of yard waste dumped in local landfills.

The workshop will take place from 9 to 11 a.m. on the east side of Rancho Tapo Community Park, adjacent to the East County Courthouse, 3855 Alamo St. Participants are encouraged to leave their cars in the courthouse parking lot and bring a blanket or lawn chair.

The workshop will include tips on creating compost, using mulch and compost, worm composting and cutting down on yard waste.

City officials say yard trimmings make up more than 20% of the garbage collected in Simi Valley. Workshop participants will learn how to reduce the amount of natural waste produced on their property and improve the health of their lawns and gardens.

The workshop is one of a series of recycling programs offered by Simi Valley to comply with a state law aimed at reducing landfill deposits.
