Japan Bars U.S. Apple Imports: A 22-year-old trade dispute widened when the Japanese ambassador to the United States said no apples from this year’s U.S. harvest will be allowed into his country, due to pest concerns. Ambassador Takakazu Kuriyama said Japanese inspectors will visit Washington state within a month to examine codling moths and apple worms to clear some of the 1994 harvest for shipments to Japan. Rep. Jay Inslee (D-Wash.) said get-tough tactics may be needed.
