Accord on Interim Rule Reported
The leaders of Cambodia’s three main political parties have agreed to set up an interim government, national radio said.
It said agreement was reached at a meeting Tuesday between head of state Prince Norodom Sihanouk and members of the Constituent Assembly elected last month in U.N.-organized balloting.
Chea Sim, president of the government’s Cambodian People’s Party, Prince Norodom Ranariddh of the royalists’ party, FUNCINPEC, and Son Sann of the Buddhist Liberal Democratic Party will decide the formation of the Cabinet among themselves, the radio said.
At the United Nations, the Security Council on Tuesday unanimously endorsed the results of the democratic elections.
In the election, the royalist party took 58 seats to the government party’s 51 and the Buddhist party’s 10. But the government party has refused to accept the results, alleging fraud.
The 120-seat assembly is due to draw up a constitution and form a permanent government within three months.
