Whittier : Environmental Study of Canyon Plan Scheduled

Share

The City Council has chosen a West Covina-based consulting firm to study the potential environmental impact of a development proposed for Worsham Canyon. The proposal calls for 31 houses to be built on 18.6 acres in the canyon, which lies at the base of the Whittier Hills, adjacent to the Whittier College campus.

David Evans and Associates will conduct the environmental study, which must be paid for by the developer. The firm’s $43,167 bid for the work was the lowest received by the city. Potential concerns include the canyon’s wildlife and an earthquake fault, city Planning Director Elvin Porter said.

Some area residents and local naturalists have lobbied hard against past development proposals. They want the pristine, privately owned canyon to remain undeveloped. City Council members turned back a previous development proposal over concerns about potential flooding and erosion problems.
