How to Save Your Skin

In addition to using sunscreen, there are several other things dermatologists and others say parents and children can do to minimize their exposure to damaging ultraviolet rays:
* Avoid peak sun hours: 11 a.m to 4 p.m. during daylight-saving time.
* Wear a wide-brimmed hat; it reduces UV exposure by up to 50%, according to the National Society to Prevent Blindness.
* Wear tightly knit, dry clothing; it screens out virtually all UV rays.
* Put dark towels under a beach umbrella to help prevent reflection of the light from the sand.
* Avoid being out in the sun all day, no matter what protection you use.
