Carmelites Finally Leave Auschwitz
The last Carmelite nuns have left a convent next to the Auschwitz death camp, ending a controversy that strained Roman Catholic-Jewish relations for almost nine years, a priest said Thursday.
The convent opened in 1984 in a building once used to store poison gas for the death chambers at the camp, where Nazis murdered more than 1.5 million people.
The vast majority of the victims were Jews, but Poles, Gypsies, Soviet war prisoners and homosexuals were also killed there.
The last of the 14 nuns left the convent Tuesday, said Father Marek Glownia, who heads the Center for Information, Dialogue and Prayer in Auschwitz.
