Queen Elizabeth II tried her hand at target practice on the British army’s firing range Friday and suggested she had the makings of a crack shot.

The 66-year-old British sovereign fired an army rifle for the first time during a tour of a practice range at Bisley, in southern England, and came close to scoring a bull’s-eye with the military’s new SA-80 rifle, Army Rifle Assn. officials said.

Her single shot hit near the edge of the center of the target.

The queen joined the women’s army, the Auxiliary Territorial Service, during World War II and did some work as a mechanic on truck engines.

Her husband, Prince Philip, and heir to the throne Prince Charles are both considered keen huntsmen.
