WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — A couple on a Mexican cruise spotted a crew member chucking bags of trash into the ocean off the Florida Keys and thought it might be well worth recording on their video camera. It was.
On Friday, a judge awarded Marilyn and Alvin Levett $250,000, half the fine imposed on Princess Cruises when it pleaded guilty to criminal ocean dumping.
The Levetts, from Ypsilanti, Mich., were aboard the Regal Princess the night of Oct. 25, 1991, when they saw someone dumping about two dozen plastic bags of garbage five miles off the Keys as the ship neared the end of the cruise.
Marilyn Levett went to their cabin to get their video camera. They turned the tape over to federal authorities.
