Cuba’s state electricity company warned the public Friday to expect longer than normal power disruptions in coming days because of fuel shortages affecting the communist-ruled island.

“We have been forced to reduce electricity generation levels,” the company, Union Electrica, said in a statement. It gave limited availability of fuel as the main reason.

The company called on factories and other centers to cut consumption so that priority could be given to essential production of food and hard-currency exports and public services such as water distribution, hospitals, bakeries and refrigeration plants.

At the international branch of the National Bank of Cuba in Vedado district, staff told customers Friday that they were halting banking operations to the public because of a power outage expected to last up to 16 hours.

Major dollar-earning tourist hotels are either spared the cuts or have their own generators.
