South African anti-apartheid leader Nelson Mandela accepted an award that honored him seven years ago, when he was still in prison. Mandela accepted the W.E.B. Du Bois Medal on Saturday at the NAACP’s national convention in Indianapolis. He received the award in 1986 for his fight against oppression of blacks by the white minority in his native South Africa. In remarks to the convention, Mandela linked the civil rights struggles of blacks in the United States to those in his nation.
