Kuwait has appointed a woman as the new head of its national university for the first time.

An Education Ministry official said that chemistry professor Fayza Kharafi was the first woman rector of Kuwait University.

Al Anba newspaper said she will be the first woman to hold such a post in the Arab world.

Kharafi, a Kuwaiti in her 40s and a graduate of Cairo's Ain Shams University, will take up her post as eighth rector of the 25-year-old university this month.
