Japan’s Excess Workers Boost Unofficial Jobless Rate: The nation’s official unemployment rate of 2.5% rises to 6.03% when salaried employees who are given nothing to do are included, the Sumitomo-Life Research Institute said. “The difference is the so-called in-house unemployment, which amounted to about 2.46 million in the January to March quarter,” said Tsugunori Hara, an economist at the institute. Hara said the bulk of in-house unemployment was in white-collar jobs and non-manufacturing industries, which has contributed to keeping down productivity in those sectors.
