World IN BRIEF : VIETNAM : Hanoi Agrees to Accept U.S. Envoys
In a sign of improving cooperation between the United States and Vietnam, a visiting U.S. presidential delegation proposed posting three diplomats to Hanoi to handle consular matters, and Vietnam immediately accepted in principle. If final agreement is reached, it would be the first such U.S. diplomatic presence in Hanoi in nearly 40 years. Leaders of the U.S. delegation said Washington wants to assign three State Department officers to Hanoi to provide services for an increasing number of American visitors and to free an existing U.S. military mission here to focus more fully on resolving the fates of missing American servicemen.
