Rockwell Lab Waste Cleanup Discussed
The removal of hazardous waste from Rockwell Corp.’s Santa Susana Field Laboratory northwest of Chatsworth will be among the projects discussed today at a public meeting in Simi Valley, to be conducted by the U. S. Department of Energy.
Federal officials will discuss the department’s accomplishments, budget constraints and environmental cleanup plans for the 1994 fiscal year, which begins Oct. 1.
The meeting will run from 7 to 10 p.m. in the Clarion Hotel, 1775 Madera Road.
Carol Powell, an Energy Department spokeswoman, said a key discussion topic will be the removal of hazardous waste from the Rockwell site, where the company tested rocket engines and conducted nuclear research.
The company is now engaged in a $40-million cleanup of soil, ground water and buildings that are contaminated by radioactive and chemical waste.
The federal agency is providing funds and overseeing Rockwell’s cleanup of the grounds.
After presentations by Department of Energy project managers, members of the audience will be permitted to ask questions on the cleanup efforts, Powell said.
