Sergei Bubka returned to form, winning the pole vault at 19 feet 5 1/2 inches in a Grand Prix meet at Nice, France.

Bubka had won only one of his last four meets before Nice and had a jump of only 18-4 3/4 on Monday at Barcelona.

Olympic gold medalists Rod Milburn, Mac Wilkins and Jean Shiley Newhouse, and coach Stan Wright were elected to the USA Track and Field Hall of Fame.

Wright was the coach when two U.S. sprinters were late for their second-round races in the 1972 Munich Olympics.

Hockey

Center Corey Millen, acquired by New Jersey from the Kings in a draft-day trade, has signed a multiyear contract with the Devils. The Devils exchanged a fifth-round draft choice June 26 for Millen, 29.

Free-agent winger Peter Douris, who spent the 1992-93 season with the Boston Bruins organization, has reportedly signed a three-year, $925,000 contract with the Mighty Ducks. Douris played 19 games in the NHL last season, scoring four goals with four assists.

The Tampa Bay Lightning signed veteran left wing Gerard Gallant. Gallant, 29, entering his ninth season, spent the first eight with the Detroit Red Wings. Last season, he had 10 goals and 20 assists in 67 games.

The San Jose Sharks have given goalie Arturs Irbe permission to play for the Latvian national team next month in a qualifying tournament for the 1994 Winter Olympics.

World Boxing Council heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis will fight Frank Bruno on Oct. 1 in Wales, Lewis’ manager, Frank Maloney, said. . . . Rafael Ruelas of Sylmar said he has signed to fight Freddie Pendleton for the International Boxing Federation lightweight championship in the fall. . . . The House Foreign Affairs Committee approved a resolution opposing Beijing’s bid to host the 2000 Summer Olympics because of China’s human rights record. The resolution should come before the full House in the next two weeks.
