MOSCOW : It’s the Economy

Share

Russian President Boris N. Yeltsin’s archfoe, Parliament Chairman Ruslan I. Khasbulatov, has called conservative delegates to a special two-day All-Russia Economic Conference Wednesday to focus attention on the sorry state of the Russian economy and condemn Yeltsin’s reform program.

Khasbulatov’s gambit is clear--a Russian version of President Clinton’s campaign mantra, “It’s the economy, stupid.” Yeltsin has enjoyed some moderate progress recently in moving Russia’s new draft constitution toward completion, and Khasbulatov wants to shift the political spotlight to the country’s financial plight.
