Japan’s Auto Exports Drop: Vehicle exports in the first half of the year fell to 2.79 million, the fewest for any first half since 1979, the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Assn. said in Tokyo. The yen’s rise against the dollar made Japanese vehicles more expensive abroad, an association official said. The export total included 2,190,168 passenger cars, down 3.5% from a year earlier; 555,240 trucks, down 7%, and 45,639 buses, up 33.1%, the official said. He said exports to the United States fell by 4.4%, to 808,494 vehicles, and those to the European Community by 12% to 657,654 vehicles. Exports to Asia rose by 50.7% to 415,717.
