‘Goofy’ Errors on Jewish Religion, Race
* As a Jew and a historian, I must respond to “History Distinguishes Religion, Race” (Letters, July 18). Marianne Connolly made a number of goofy errors.
She claimed: “The race of Israelites (Jews) is Hebrew.” Wrong. The language is Hebrew and there is no such “race.” Jews are blue-eyed, blond Europeans and jet-black Africans, just as Christians are.
The most absurd claim was that “nobody can ‘become’ a Jew.” Wrong again. Abraham, Ruth and countless thousands of others, including my wife and me, “became” (i.e. converted) Jews.
It is sad that one must discredit what should have died in Berlin, 1945!
