U.S OLYMPIC FESTIVAL ROUNDUP : Devers Wins 100 to Earn Third Gold

From Staff and Wire Reports

Gail Devers made it three gold medals in three tries in the U.S. Olympic Festival, winning the 100-meter dash Saturday night in 11.29 seconds.

Devers, gold medalist in the 100 at the Barcelona Olympics, beat Crystal Braddock of Austin, Tex., who finished in 11.80. Devers had won her other festival gold medals Friday night, setting a meet record in the 100 high hurdles and anchoring the 400 relay.

Another former Olympian, Greg Foster, pulled up late in the 110 high hurdles, and the victory went to Robert Reading of Buffalo, N.Y., with a time of 13.71.

Foster said he didn’t expect the gun to go off as quickly as he did. “I regained it too quickly instead of trying to let it happen,” he said.

He had planned to make Saturday’s race his final performance in the United States. “Right now, I’m not quitting on a note like this. I can’t,” he said.

In gymnastics, Gregg Curtis of Carmel, N.Y., won two gold medals and a silver in his final appearance before retiring from the sport to join a circus.
