An avalanche on the Italian side of Mt. Blanc early Monday killed at least eight climbers on Europe’s highest mountain.

A police spokesman said three of the victims were Italian, three German and two French.

The Ansa news agency reported that four other climbers were believed missing after the disaster on the Grandes Jorasses, a section of the Mt. Blanc massif on the Italian-French border with a peak of more than 13,000 feet.
