A former U.S. diplomat in Bolivia and Chile and expert outdoorsman died while searching for two missing Americans in the Andes.

Two U.S. Embassy officials were with Stan Shepard on when their vehicle slipped off a snow-covered road south of La Paz on Thursday. The officials were hospitalized in stable condition.

The Andes had been hit with severe storms that blocked most roads around La Paz.

Shepard was press attache in La Paz between 1980 and 1983. He later served in the U.S. Embassy in Chile until his retirement from the foreign service in 1991, when he returned to Bolivia.
