World IN BRIEF : AUSTRALIA : Churches to Be Sued on Sexual Assaults

An Australian law firm said it is planning to sue the country’s Roman Catholic and Anglican churches on behalf of more than 50 men and women who allege they were sexually assaulted by clergymen over the last 60 years. Melbourne firm Maurice Blackburn & Co. said writs will be issued in Victoria courts over the next two weeks seeking unlimited damages. “(Each) church knew or ought to have known that these individuals were likely to offend again. The churches’ policy is to recycle these people from parish to parish, from school to school,” legal partner Don O’Halloran charged.
