In this art show, the exhibits move--fast. That’s because the art on display is the Korean martial art of taekwondo.

On Saturday and Sunday, the first L.A. International Taekwondo Championships will take place at Loyola Marymount University’s Gersten Pavilion.

Among the participants, organizers say, will be the Korean national taekwondo team--the world’s best.

Saturday’s events will feature a competition among U.S. black belt fighters, starting at 3:30 p.m. The top eight finishers will receive a week of free taekwondo training in Korea. The highlight of the championships comes Sunday, from 4:15 p.m. to 9 p.m., when teams from the United States, Korea and eight other countries will square off for an international black belt competition.

Local taekwondo enthusiasts will get a chance to show their moves in two open competitions--on Saturday for boys and girls 6 to 12, and on Sunday for participants 13 and older. For spectators who prefer their martial arts on celluloid, clips and trailers from the movie “Hard Target,” the TV series “Kung Fu” and other productions will be shown at Gersten as a sidelight to Sunday’s competition.
