LOS ANGELES : 4 Arrested in Bribery Probe of Community Service Firm

Share

Police on Friday arrested three employees of the Volunteer Center of Los Angeles and a fourth person for taking bribes from Los Angeles County residents ordered to perform community service.

The company, which has been under contract with the county for eight years, assigns jobs to people convicted of misdemeanors and ordered to perform community service.

Alpha Williams, supervisor of the company’s South-Central Los Angeles office at 8812 Main Street for 18 years, was the ringleader in the scam, said Lt. Kenneth E. Welty of the Bunco/Forgery Division of the Los Angeles Police Department.

Also arrested were Tina Doby, an employee for four years, and Alvara Velo, who worked for the company for one year.

Henry Campbell, who did not work for Volunteer Center, screened people before they entered the building and told them he could “take care of them,” said Detective Reni Lacasse, the investigating officer for the case.

Lacasse said Campbell sent people to either Williams or Doby.
