Typhoon Hits Tokyo With High Winds, Rain

Reuters

Typhoon Vernon hit the Tokyo area with gale-force winds and torrential rain Friday, severing rail, road and air links in the capital before heading north along the Pacific coast.

Weather forecasters said Vernon, the 11th typhoon to hit Japan this season, brought a record 2.5 inches of rain in an hour in Tokyo’s central business district.

Railroad spokesmen said a total of 1 million commuters and travelers were affected by Vernon. More than 40 lines, including the “bullet” train service linking Tokyo with western Japan, were halted.

More than 120 domestic flights to and from Tokyo were also canceled. About 50 international arrivals to Tokyo’s Narita international airport were delayed or were diverted to other airports.
