Newspaper Group Selects Publisher
Florida newspaper executive John B. Wilcox has been named publisher of Ventura County Newspapers and will assume responsibility for the newspaper group next week, officials said.
Wilcox, 42, is currently the business manager for the Stuart News in Stuart, Fla., where he has held various management positions during the past 12 years.
As publisher, he will serve as the chief executive over the newspapers owned by John P. Scripps Newspapers, said company President Peter LaDow. John P. Scripps Newspapers of San Diego is a wholly-owned subsidiary of E.W. Scripps Co. of Cincinnati.
“This was always part of the plan, to identify and bring in a full-time person,” said LaDow, who served as interim publisher in the first 10 months.
Wilcox’s appointment was announced Monday, the same day the newspaper group announced that 10 of its 560 employees were being laid off in a cost-cutting move.
The newspaper group, formed in November, includes the Camarillo Daily News, Ventura Star-Free Press, Simi Valley Enterprise, Moorpark News-Mirror and the Thousand Oaks News Chronicle.
