ORANGE : Officer Charged in Stabbing of Man

Prosecutors on Tuesday charged an Orange Police Department sergeant with one count of attempted murder in connection with the stabbing of his roommate in their Hollywood apartment.

Sgt. Paul S. Gibbs, 42, who was in stable condition in the jail ward of County-USC Medical Center in Los Angeles with a cut to his right arm, is scheduled to be arraigned later this week in Municipal Court, said Sandi Gibbons, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office. Gibbs’ arraignment was postponed because of the wound, she said.

Gibbs was arrested Sunday morning in an apartment he has shared for the last nine months with William Ray, 32, a hospital clerk. Gibbs told police that he and Ray began arguing Saturday night in a bar and continued at their apartment in the 7900 block of Selma Avenue after he told Ray he was going to end their relationship, according to a police report.

Gibbs said he did not pull out a pocket knife until Ray stabbed him first in the arm with another knife. Ray called police, and when officers arrived they found him in bed bleeding from multiple stab wounds.

Ray was listed in fair condition Tuesday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center with wounds to the upper body and a punctured left lung.

Orange Police Department officials placed Gibbs, an 18-year veteran who helps supervise the motorcycle patrol officers, on paid administrative leave pending an internal investigation, authorities said. His bail was set at $535,000.
