SIMI VALLEY : School Officials Oppose Prop. 174

Share

Simi Valley school officials have gone on record in opposition to Proposition 174, the statewide ballot measure slated for a November vote that would give parents tax money to pay for private school tuition.

If approved by voters, the initiative would allow parents to collect a $2,600 voucher from the state toward private school tuition. That amount is about half of the $5,000 per student the state now spends on public education.

The board of the Simi Valley Unified School District said Tuesday night that the voucher plan would drain money from public schools. Even if no students transferred, the measure would require the state to pay millions to the families of students already attending private schools, officials said.

“Our system, the one your children attend, will be harmed by this legislation,” board member Diane Collins told the audience.

The board voted 5 to 0 to support a resolution against the proposal.
