FBI agents on Friday arrested the father and stepmother of a 5-year-old girl who suffocated in two sealed plastic bags in Kentucky nearly four years ago, federal officials said.

The couple, Thomas and Roxanne Suleski, were arrested without incident in Torrance on charges of making false statements to federal agents investigating the death of the girl, Alexandria Cristine Suleski, the FBI said. It was not disclosed whether murder charges would be filed.

Charlie J. Parsons, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Los Angeles office, said a federal complaint against Roxanne Suleski, 33, alleges that she sealed the girl inside two plastic bags before the child suffocated Oct. 26, 1989. Soon after determining that the girl was dead, the woman and her husband buried the body in a wooded area near Kentucky’s Otter Creek State Park, Parsons said.

Thomas Suleski, 35, had watched his daughter being placed in the bags and did not interfere, V. Dave Kohl, an FBI special agent in Louisville, told reporters at a news conference.

The couple then falsely reported to authorities that the girl had wandered from their house trailer in Radcliff, Ky., and disappeared, authorities alleged.
