BURBANK : School Ordered to Re-Register Students

Burbank school district officials--who are investigating rumors that children from Glendale illegally attend Joaquin Miller Elementary school--have ordered that the entire population of the school be re-registered. So far the search for illegal attendees has turned up no one from out of town.

All told, the brouhaha has turned up six students who are in the wrong place. But they’re from Burbank and simply didn’t realize that school boundaries had changed, said Bob Fraser, director of elementary education and categorical programs for the Burbank Unified School District.

To comply with the re-registration order, parents must bring a Burbank city utility bill, a driver’s license or other photo identification, and their child’s birth certificate or passport, to district officials by today, or their children will not be allowed to attend school. So far, 500 of the schools 800 students have been re-registered.

Miller Elementary, built with a capacity for 367 students, had an enrollment of 812 in 1992-93. Temporary classrooms and split days for kindergartens have been used to accommodate the overcrowding.
