Chevron to Buy Old Cars for Air Pollution Credit: In a pollution-offset scheme similar to those pioneered by Unocal Corp., Chevron Corp. will announce today that it will pay $700 each for up to 3,900 pre-1972 cars and trucks registered in Southern California. In exchange, the South Coast Air Quality Management District will allow the oil company an extra three years to install a vapor recovery system at its El Segundo marine terminal. As required by the district’s Rule 1610, the emissions systems will be crushed. Chevron has set up a “Project CAR” hot line: (800) 227-1971.
