Santa Fe Springs : EPA Calls Public Meeting to Explain Toxic Cleanup
The Environmental Protection Agency will have a public meeting tonight to explain the cleanup of a 43-acre toxic waste dump in Santa Fe Springs.
EPA officials will answer questions about the agency’s proposal at the 7:30 p.m. meeting in St. Paul High School’s library, 9635 S. Greenleaf Ave.
St. Paul High School is just north of the Waste Disposal Inc. site at Santa Fe Springs and Los Nietos roads. The dump is polluted with toxic chemicals and waste from oil drilling.
Federal officials want to bury the chemicals under a layer of plastic and asphalt about six inches deep and 20 acres wide. They say the asphalt will prevent chemicals from polluting underground sources of drinking water.
The Times in Sunday’s edition reported the wrong location for water samples that showed traces of a suspected cancer-causing chemical. Water samples containing trichloroethylene were found underneath the landfill site, Project Manager Rusty Harris-Bishop said.
There are no signs that the sources of drinking water for Santa Fe Springs, which are located at least three miles from the landfill, are contaminated, he added.
