LOS ANGELES : Council Limits Travel by Appointed Officials
The Los Angeles City Council has approved a new policy for foreign travel by city employees that prohibits more than one appointed commissioner from going overseas without council approval.
The policy was drawn up in response to an uproar last spring over a proposed 10-nation Asian-Pacific tour by a delegation of Harbor Department officials in the waning days of Mayor Tom Bradley’s tenure. The trip was subsequently scaled back.
The new policy also requires that city employees--including elected officials--traveling or attending a convention at taxpayer expense prepare a report describing the benefits to the city.
