Santa Clarita / Antelope Valley : State Won’t Fund School Walkways and Landscaping
The State Allocation Board has refused to pay for covered walkways and excess landscaping for the William S. Hart Union High School District’s planned junior high, a decision that will cost the district more than $500,000.
Hart district officials were seeking an even split of the school’s $12.68-million cost. The state board approved matching funds for only $11.63 million in construction costs, leaving the district to pay the remaining $1 million.
The district will be able to bear the unfunded expenses for the school, according to Bill Maddigan, director of business services.
“We don’t have a large reserve of developer fees, but we do have enough to finish the project,” Maddigan said.
The junior high school is scheduled to open in the fall of 1994 on a 25-acre site near Via Princessa and Rainbow Glen Drive. A name has not been chosen for the 1,000-student-capacity school.
Landscaping and asphalt work on the project exceeded the maximum amount allowed for a school of its size by $518,509, according to Sharon Drago, school facilities program analyst for the State Allocation Board.
An additional $530,218 for covered walkways, wiring for security measures and conduits for computer cables were also passed over by the state agency.
