S. Africa Toll: 32 Dead in 24 Hours
Gunmen struck Thursday in South Africa’s troubled black townships, raising the death toll in political violence to at least 32 people in 24 hours.
Police reported seven deaths in scattered attacks in Natal province Thursday, while in Katlehong township east of Johannesburg two blacks died in an ambush on their car.
President Frederik W. de Klerk said supporters of the African National Congress and its rival Inkatha Freedom Party could be involved in the latest violence.
In Cape Town, ANC President Nelson Mandela expressed anger at the Wednesday night massacre of at least 23 people in Wadeville, east of Johannesburg.
Inkatha described the killings as horrific and called for an urgent meeting with the police and political rivals to try to stem the violence.
