Judge OKs Opening of Schools in Chicago

CHICAGO —
A judge suspended provisions of a state law prohibiting public schools from opening without a balanced budget, allowing classes in the nation’s third-largest school system to start Wednesday, a week late.
Classes could be short-lived, however. The union scheduled a vote for Wednesday on whether teachers should strike next Monday. The Chicago school system has a deficit of $298 million.
