Yasser Arafat returned to PLO headquarters Wednesday and said he is confident his accord with Israel will help lead to a comprehensive peace between Arabs and the Jewish state.

Arafat stepped off his Moroccan government jet wearing a pistol in his holster, which he had discarded during his trip to the United States to witness the signing of the historic agreement.

The PLO leader praised President Clinton: “I can say now that the Palestinian people have a good friend at the White House.”

On hand to greet Arafat at the airport was the U.S. ambassador to Tunisia, John McCarthy, who had shunned him in the past because of American policy banning contacts with the PLO.

Hundreds of Palestinians waited for Arafat outside the airport, waving Palestinians flags and singing their national anthem.
