PUENTE HILLS : Review of Plans to Expand Landfill Ruled Inadequate

Share

A Los Angeles Superior Court judge ruled Thursday that an environmental review of plans to expand the Puente Hills landfill--the nation’s second-largest--is inadequate.

Judge Diane Wayne ruled that the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles, which operates the landfill, did not adequately examine the effect of the expansion on the area’s ground water.

A spokeswoman for the sanitation districts said it was not clear if the ruling would delay the expansion because the judge might require only minor changes to the environmental impact report.

In July, the County Board of Supervisors voted to keep the landfill open for 10 more years, and allowed it to expand eastward to within 1,750 feet of Hacienda Heights homes and a school. The landfill had been scheduled to close Nov. 1.
