GOLF ROUNDUP : McGovern Takes Advantage of Mistakes

First-round co-leader Bill Glasson bogeyed three of his last six holes Friday, allowing Jim McGovern to move into the lead after two rounds of the B.C. Open at Endicott, N.Y.

McGovern shot a four-under-par 67 for a 136 total and a one-stroke lead over Peter Jacobsen with nine golfers within another two strokes.

McGovern, the winner of the Houston Open in May, was four-under before missing a 12-foot par putt on No. 9. He regained the stroke with a birdie on 11 and went to five under when he made an eight-foot birdie putt on the next hole.

Mike Hill, a two-time winner on the Senior PGA Tour this year, shot a seven-under 65 to take a one-shot lead over Lee Trevino in the first round of the Nationwide Championship at Alpharetta, Ga.

Hill made eight birdies and one bogey on the 6,832-yard Country Club of the South layout in suburban Atlanta.

Trevino had a run of five consecutive birdies starting at No. 9.

“It’s the best round I’ve had,” he said. “I can’t remember starting with 66. I did it all on the back.”

Four others were tied at 67--Al Geiberger, Walt Morgan, Mike Joyce and Tom Wargo.

Jack Nicklaus birdied the first three holes on his way to a 68 that came despite turning his right ankle at his hotel earlier in the day. Nicklaus, who was limping noticeably, received treatment until just before beginning his round.

Leading money-winner Bob Charles shot 69.
