REGIONAL ROUNDUP : Graves Rallies Syracuse Over Cincinnati

Marvin Graves shook off two costly fumbles and led an 18-point rally in the final 9:46 Saturday night as No. 12 Syracuse survived a scare from Cincinnati, 24-21, at Syracuse, N.Y.

Graves had 351 yards in total offense, increasing his career total to a school-record 7,256, which is 193 more than former record-holder Don McPherson. But Graves had two key fumbles in the third quarter when it appeared Cincinnati, a four-touchdown underdog, would pull off the upset.

David Small’s third short touchdown run gave Cincinnati (2-2) a 21-6 lead early in the final quarter before Syracuse (3-0-1) came back.

Boston College (1-2, 1-1 in the Big East) blocked three consecutive punts to tie an NCAA record and Darnell Campbell gained 114 yards and scored four touchdowns during a 66-14 victory over Temple (1-2, 0-2) at Boston. . . . Keith Elias ran for 132 yards and scored three touchdowns as Princeton (2-0) held Lafayette (2-1) to 18 yards during a 21-7 victory at Easton, Penn.

Justin Fossbender caught a 24-yard pass from Chad Andrcejewski for the game’s only touchdown in Columbia’s (1-1) 7-0 victory over Fordham (0-3) at New York. It was Columbia’s first shutout since 1980. . . . Rick Roper scored twice and the Army (2-1) defense forced two critical turnovers in the first half of a 31-9 victory over Virginia Military Institute (0-3) at West Point, N.Y.

SOUTH

No. 24 Louisville 41, Texas 10--Jeff Brohm of Louisville (4-0), who completed 14 of 24 passes for 293 yards, set the tone when he connected with running back Ralph Dawkins on an 80-yard touchdown pass play on the second play at Louisville, Ky.

Dawkins rushed for 117 yards and had three receptions for 95 yards as Louisville gained 560 yards.

Texas is 0-2-1.

Shawn Knight of William & Mary (2-2) completed 10 of 17 passes for 219 yards and three touchdowns and also ran for a touchdown in a 45-17 nonconference victory over Harvard (1-1) at Williamsburg, Va. . . . Chris Hart of Navy (2-1) intercepted a pass with 1:08 left, preserving a 27-20 nonconference victory over Bowling Green at Annapolis, Md.

SOUTHWEST

Tailback John Henry scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns as Baylor (3-1) outlasted Texas Tech (1-3), 28-26, in a Southwest Conference opener at Waco, Tex. . . . Byron Coston scored three touchdowns for Rice (3-1) in a 49-21 victory over Iowa State (1-3) at Houston. . . . Freshman Ramon Flanigan passed for two touchdowns and scored another as Southern Methodist beat Texas Christian, 21-15, at Ft. Worth.

WEST

No. 21 Brigham Young 30, Air Force 3--John Walsh passed for three touchdowns, two to Eric Drage, who set school records for career yardage and touchdowns during the Cougars’ Western Athletic Conference victory at Provo, Utah.

Walsh completed 28 of 37 passes for 370 yards for BYU (4-0, 3-0 in the WAC). Drage, who had 12 receptions for 213 yards, has 27 touchdown receptions, eclipsing Phil Odle’s 1967 record of 25. Drage has 2,675 career receiving yards, bettering Matt Bellini’s 1990 record of 2,635.

Air Force is 1-3 and 0-3 in the WAC.

Fresno State 30, Utah State 14--Trent Dilfer completed 14 of 23 passes for 295 yards and three touchdowns and Ron Rivers became the school’s all-time leading rusher in the nonconference game at Fresno.

Rivers, who gained 106 yards and scored one touchdown, broke Dean Philpott’s record of 2,533 yards set in 1954-57. Rivers has 2,536 yards in his three years at Fresno State (3-1).

Utah State is 1-3.

Stoney Case of New Mexico (1-3) passed for four touchdowns during a 42-7 nonconference victory over New Mexico State (2-2) at Albuquerque, N.M. . . . Joe Hughes of Wyoming (3-1, 1-0 in the WAC) passed for two touchdowns and ran for a third in the Cowboys’ 26-12 WAC victory over Utah (2-2, 0-1) at Laramie, Wyo.

Scott Crabtree passed for five touchdowns and LeShon Johnson scored on a run with 2:02 left to lift Northern Illinois (2-2, 2-0) to a 46-42 Big West Conference victory over Nevada (2-2, 0-1) at Reno. . . . Anthony Jones of Redlands (3-0) gained 135 yards in 29 carries and scored two touchdowns during a 27-23 nonconference victory over Hayward (0-4) at Hayward.

Danny Pasquil of La Verne (2-1, 2-0) rushed for 207 yards during a 24-10 victory over Cal Lutheran (2-1, 1-1) in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at La Verne. . . . Shawn Anderson of Azusa Pacific (1-2) scored on an eight-yard run with 8:48 left to give the Cougars a 14-10 nonconference victory over Whittier (0-3) at Azusa.

John Lutz of Colorado College (2-0) gained 179 yards and scored three touchdowns during a 42-21 nonconference victory over Pomona-Pitzer at Pomona. . . . Davin Lundquist scored on a 35-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to give Occidental a 17-13 nonconference victory over Trinity (Tex.) at San Antonio. . . . Cal Poly San Luis Obispo took a 41-0 halftime lead en route to a 63-6 victory over Chico State in a nonconference game at San Luis Obispo.
