ACTIVE SENIORS: With a fifth of its population 65 or older, it’s no wonder that Ojai provides plenty for senior citizens to do. Consider today’s offerings at the Little House Senior Center: lap swimming, aerobics, bridge, Hawaiian dancing and Spanish--all before lunch. (They play bingo in the afternoon.) . . . “We keep busy, that’s for sure,” said Carol Sidoti, 71. . . . Although they make up a small percentage of Moorpark’s citizenry, older residents are finding more activities at the Moorpark Senior Center, coordinator Carol Ghens said. The city took over the center last year from a nonprofit group.

HAPPY HUNTERS: One of the best deer-hunting seasons in years ended Sunday in south and northwest Ventura County. “Because of all the rain, the spring forage crops were up a lot, so births and survival improved,” said Morgan Boucke of the Department of Fish and Game. . . . The boom is evident in an increased number killed by motorists. Four have been hit this year on one stretch of California 150. . . . Deer-hunting season starts Saturday in the northeast county.

RED PERIL: To John (Jack) McManus, reports of communism’s demise are premature: “My attitude is, communism isn’t dead. It’s alive in China and Cuba and North Korea, and to some extent in Cambridge, Mass., and Berkeley, Calif.” . . . Of course, without communism, McManus might need to find another job. He’s head of the John Birch Society, which has 150 Ventura County members (B1).

PARTY WEEK: The long-awaited connector between the Moorpark and Simi Valley freeways is set to open Oct. 15, but the state Department of Transportation hasn’t had time to plan a party. The agency is focusing on festivities for the 17-mile-long Century Freeway in Los Angeles County, set to open the day before. . . . “It’s going to be a very busy week,” Caltrans spokesman Russ Snyder said. “The No. 1 transportation project in L. A. County, followed by the No. 1 project in Ventura County.”
