Fiat Discussing European Alliances: Chairman Giovanni Agnelli said his company has been discussing the alliances with car makers to tackle overcapacity and high production costs, the Financial Times newspaper reported. Though no deals are pending and Agnelli would not identify possible partners, he said further consolidation of the European car business is inevitable. Fiat earlier this year was rumored to be discussing an alliance with Renault, but the French car maker then agreed on a merger with Sweden’s Volvo. Fiat last week announced a $600-million loss for the first half of 1993, caused by a steep fall in demand for cars in Europe.
