Yutaka Uyeno, a prominent Japanese businessman and International Rotary member, will receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Cal Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks on Thursday.

Uyeno, 87, will travel from his home in Yokohama, Japan, to receive the award.

Such awards are usually given at the college’s spring graduation ceremonies, but as Uyeno could not attend then, his will be presented next month, said Linda Fulford, a Cal Lutheran spokeswoman.

Uyeno has served as chairman of several companies, including the Hotel New Grand and Yokohama F.M. Broadcasting Co., and has been active in many local and Japanese civic groups such as the Boy Scouts, the Chamber of Commerce and Rotary International.

The Thursday awards ceremony will be at 2 p.m. in Cal Lutheran’s Preus-Brandt Forum, and is open to the public.
