More than 700 Somalis, one-third of them women and children, were wounded in one round of U.N.-Somali fighting that killed 13 U.S. soldiers, the International Committee of the Red Cross said Thursday.

ICRC spokesman Tony Burgener said his Swiss-run organization did not know how many Somalis were killed in the fighting last Sunday and Monday.

In a statement, the ICRC said it “deplores incidents in which the mortal remains of victims were not treated with due respect,” a reference to bodies of U.S. soldiers dragged through the streets.

It said ICRC representatives toured Mogadishu hospitals and counted the casualties. It said the numbers were in addition to “the high number of fatalities among Somalis” and U.N. soldiers.

Fourteen peacekeepers, including 13 Americans, were killed and more than 80 wounded in the Sunday-Monday fighting, including 77 U.S. soldiers. One wounded American died Thursday.
