Warning Issued on Playpens: Improper assembly of two types of playpens made by Pomona-based Baby Trend Inc. could cause them to collapse and seriously injure infants, the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission said. A 1-year-old was killed and three other babies were injured when mesh-sided Home and Roam playpens collapsed because the top rails were not locked in place. The 40-by-40-inch and 28-by-40-inch models were sold under the Baby Trend and Baby Express names. About 65,000 of the playpens have been sold nationwide during 1992 and 1993 under the Baby Trend label. An undetermined number were sold under the name Baby Express. Consumers with the playpens can call Baby Trend at (800) 234-1879 to receive new assembly instructions.
