Hazardous-Waste Firm Wins U.S. Defense Dept. Pact

Security Environmental Systems Inc. said Monday that it has received a contract for hauling and disposing of hazardous waste generated at U.S. Department of Defense sites in seven states in the Midwest.

The contract is valued by the company at $1.8 million.

Stephen Grossman, Security Environmental president, said the contract is part of the company’s strategy to expand its geographic scope outside the Southwest.

The military installations include Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo., Ft. Riley, Kan., and Offut Air Force Base, Neb., as well as sites in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa and South Dakota.

The company has hired three employees to service the Midwest contract. Two will work from the Midwest and one will work at the company’s Huntington Beach headquarters.

Security Environmental Systems transports and disposes of hazardous waste, with facilities in Northern and Southern California, New Mexico and Texas. The company specializes in mandated cleanup of military installations, marine waste, printing industry hazardous chemicals and liquid industrial waste.

The company’s stock was up 50 cents in trading on the Nasdaq market Monday, to close at $5.75.
