GM, UAW Talks Continue: Negotiations between General Motors Corp. and the United Auto Workers resumed with company officials stressing that GM needs special concessions to avoid falling further behind its cross-town rivals. According to sources familiar with the negotiations, GM officials continued to paint a bleak financial picture for the union, claiming the auto maker’s North American vehicle operations are on track to lose more than $2 billion this year due to slow sales and high labor costs. The disclosure appeared to underscore what GM officials have been saying for months: that without concessions from the UAW on health care, pensions and job security, GM cannot compete with Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler Corp.
